The Keystone Chapter of the Allegheny Society of American Foresters invites you to the Allegheny Society of American Foresters – 2018 Winter Training on February 21-23 in Gettysburg, PA. The Program Committee has put together an impressive agenda of topics and speakers focused on the theme of “Trees and People.”
Conference Facility: The Winter Training will be held at the Wyndham Gettysburg Hotel just east of Gettysburg, PA. Check out the facility here.
Lodging and Room Reservations: A block of rooms is reserved at the Wyndham Gettysburg Hotel, 95 Presidential Circle, Gettysburg, PA 17325. Please make your reservations directly with the hotel. Ask for the Allegheny SAF meeting rate at $99/night (plus taxes). Please note, the rooms will be held at the above rate until Monday, January 29, 2018. Rooms are not guaranteed after this date. The February 21 ice-breaker will be at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor's Center just 10 minutes away and is open only to Allegheny SAF Attendees! Check out the Museum & Visitor's Center here.
Continuing Education Credit: Receive credit for your efforts! While continuing to improve your knowledge and skills as a professional forester earn continuing education credits that apply toward Professional Certification!
Continuing Education credits: (applied for): SAF Certified Forester CFE, ISA Certified Arborist CEU, and State-specific pesticide applicator re-certification credits.
A Tree Farm Inspector Training Certification session will be held February 21 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and a Pesticide Certification Training from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. A $10 fee for each session will cover the break refreshments.
Reginald D. Forbes Art Show: Since 1974, the art show and competition has been a regular part of the Allegheny Society of American Foresters winter training with the objective of fostering and displaying the artistic abilities of foresters and their family members. All those interested are invited to submit entries. A display area for viewing artwork has been set aside convenient to the main meeting room and exhibitor area. There will be three categories for entries: photography, flat art and 3-dimensional artwork. Ribbons and certificates will be presented. Awards will be determined by the votes of the attendees. So please visit the Art Show and remember to drop your vote in the ballot box after enjoying the show. Contact Mike Kusko at: mikekusko@gmail.com
Student Forum and Quiz Bowl: This year the student forum will include a mingle and munch at lunch with all attendees. The Thursday afternoon session will have a graduate student research presentation and a panel of public and private forestry professionals and an ISA certified arborist who will interact with students.
Each year college students from the region’s forestry schools compete in the Quiz Bowl. This event tests the forestry knowledge of students from baccalaureate and associate degree forestry programs. We have tried to keep costs as low as possible for students and hope we receive a good response to our “Sponsor a Student” request.
Exhibitors – Sponsors: We invite you to partner with us this year! The Exhibitor/Sponsor form is available in Word and pdf formats. Options have been designed to help you choose the right level for your budget and time. As a promotional partner or technical exhibitor, you will be a key contributor to the success of our Winter Training, providing added value and interest to the program. We also ask you to consider a Sponsorship and/or a donation to the Silent Auction. The sponsorship program has been designed to provide a wide range of options for you to consider. Your support will be appreciated!
A friendly reminder that now is the time to submit your nominations for Allegheny SAFawards. We have many members within Allegheny SAF that are deserving of these awards. Our Allegheny Chair has challenged each chapter and division to submit at least one nomination for one or more of these awards. Can you help us meet that challenge?

The Allegheny SAF 2017-2020 Strategic Plan Draft is available for review and comments. The Vision statement reads, The Allegheny SAF – primarily working through its local divisions and chapters – will become the premier widely sought after and frequently accessed organization by those seeking information, knowledge, and recommendations on the sustainable management of our dynamic forests, waters, wildlife, and other natural forest resources, and their relationship to society.

The Allegheny SAF Summer Training 2017 will be hosted by The Plateau Chapter, September 20 - 22, 2017, 45 Holiday Inn Road, Park Inn, Clarion, PA
Theme: “SILVAH: 50 Years of Practicing Sustainable Forestry and Counting”
Location: 45 Holiday Inn Road, Park Inn, Clarion, PA
On Wednesday, September 20, there will be an optional field tour to Kane Experimental Forest and surrounding landscape. Topics will include: SILVAH guidelines for regeneration, vegetation management, thinning, current research on deer impact, changes in regeneration ecology, forest health, fertilization, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration. (Bus transportation and box lunch will be provided as part of the Optional Wednesday Field Tour. Space may be limited. Register early.)

The MD/DE Division of the Allegheny SAF will be holding their Spring meeting on May 17, 2017. The meeting will begin at the Gambrill State Park Tea Room at Middletown, MD. The meeting theme will be is Municipal Watershed Forestry & Management and will feature a morning field tour, with a BBQ lunch and finish in the afternoon with a series of informative sessions held at the Boonsboro Library.

The Society of American Foresters, Plateau Chapter will hold its Winter meeting on Thursday, March 16th at the Days Inn (formally Holiday Inn) in Warren, 210 Ludlow Street, Warren, PA. This year’s main program will feature a presentation by Amanda Frederick, Resource Conservationist from the Warren County Conservation District.
Reservations are due by Monday, March 13.

The Appalachian Mountain Joint Venture and Forest Service have been working with partners (American Bird Conservancy, Ruffed Grouse Society, Audubon Pennsylvania, PA Game Commission, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resource) to organize a free, two-day workshop in June for forest landowners: Working in Your Woods, A Bird's Eye View.
The first day of the workshop will bring together speakers to present:
During the second day of the workshop, participants will visit field sites (transportation provided) to see the techniques and habitat discussed in day 1 and may have an opportunity to see birds at a bird banding site (depending on conditions).
Participants must register, but registration is free and lunches will be provided each day.
